Botulinum Toxin

Botulinum toxin, better known as Botox®, is mainly used to prevent wrinkles and attenuate expression lines but can also be used to treat facial asymmetries and hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) mainly in the armpits, palms of the hands and soles of the feet.

Its application is one of the safest and most popular cosmetic treatments performed worldwide, as it guarantees immediate and effective results with great satisfaction from the patients.

Dr. Augusto Guerreiro, from LHR – Hair & Skin Clinic, has extensive experience in botulinum toxin treatment. Make an appointment at our Lisbon Clinic.

botulinum toxin

What is botulinum toxin?

Botulinum toxin is a substance produced by bacteria, isolated, and purified, and has been used as medicine in clinical practice for decades. This substance partially and temporarily paralyses the selected muscle or promotes a reduction in sweat production at the sites where it is injected.

Small amounts of the toxin can target the exact muscles that control wrinkles and temporarily relax them. Many people choose to repeat the treatment 2 to3 times a year to help maintain the appearance of younger, smoother skin.

What causes wrinkles?

Wrinkles are marked lines on the surface of the skin, which we see appearing on our skin and which fade over time due to the loss of collagen, elastin, hyaluronic acid, and other substances that support the skin. The first wrinkles we notice usually occur because of repeated facial expressions over some time. Other factors that cause wrinkles include sun damage, smoking, dehydration, poor nutrition, stress, and certain medications.

Wrinkles are an inevitable part of ageing as our skin starts to become thinner, drier, and lose its elasticity less hydrated, and less supple and toned.

Most people dislike the appearance of wrinkles on their skin and botulinum toxin is used to reduce those fine expression lines that appear on the face, restoring a more youthful appearance.

How does botulinum toxin work?

During the treatment, Dr. Augusto Guerreiro injects botulinum toxin in small amounts into the muscles that cause the wrinkles, temporarily paralysing them. The points and the doses administered are the secrets to successful treatment with botulinum toxin.

Botulinum toxin eliminates or softens wrinkles around the eyes, the so-called “crow’s feet”, the wrinkles between the eyebrows (glabella zone), and expression wrinkles on the forehead. Although there are other areas where the toxin can be used, these are the main points and the safest and most sought after. Other areas of the face always require a more careful assessment.

When applied to the armpits or the palms of the hands, botulinum toxin can treat excessive sweating.

Who can use botulinum toxin?

This treatment is used in women and men, by people dissatisfied with the quality of the skin, due to expression wrinkles dynamic.

Botulinum toxin can also be used to prevent because its constant application decreases the strength of muscle contraction, reducing the possibility of the early formation of expression wrinkles.

Botulinum toxin is also effective in the treatment of axillary hyperhidrosis. In this case, small injections are applied to the armpits, greatly helping people who suffer from excessive armpit sweating. The duration of the effect of botulinum toxin, in this case, varies from eight months to one year.

This procedure should not be for pregnant women, nursing mothers, and people with autoimmune and neurological diseases, including those allergic to egg protein.

It is worth remembering that, unlike hyaluronic acid, botulinum toxin does not restore volume, only decreases the muscles’ activity, to prevent the skin from contracting too much, leading to the formation of wrinkles or expression lines.

How is Botulinum Toxin applied?

The application is in the doctor’s office, performed by a qualified doctor. The procedure is a little painful, in most cases is not necessary infiltrative anesthesia, only the prior use, and only in some cases, of anesthetic creams. The procedure is well tolerated and takes only a few minutes, with no need for time off work or a long recovery period.

Results can be seen 2-3 days after application and the final result after the 12-14th day. Usually, there is a follow-up visit after two weeks to evaluate its symmetry and effect, which lasts six months on average.

Side effects are minimal, generally restricted to the application site, such as minor redness, swelling and ecchymoses (bruising) are possible but are rare and usually very small.

Make your evaluation appointment with Dr. Augusto Guerreiro, who will address all your doubts and discuss the best treatment option for you.
