Hyaluronic acid filler

Dermoesthetics

Injectable filler treatments

Dermal fillers with hyaluronic acid, also known as Dermal Fillers or just Fillers, are popular cosmetic procedures in Portugal and our clinic in the Lisbon area. According to ASPS (American Society of Plastic Surgeons), In 2019, 2.7 million procedures were performed worldwide, which proves their growing popularity. Dermal fillers are an affordable and reliable treatment to smooth wrinkles and add volume to the skin, especially on the face.

Hyaluronic Acid

Many experts from around the world (who apply dermal fillers with hyaluronic acid) agree that this type of aesthetic treatment, or with other procedures, can easily bring about a more youthful appearance.

Frequently asked questions about the hyaluronic acid

What are hyaluronic acid dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are medical implants injected into the skin, also known as injectable fillers. In Portugal, several types of dermal fillers are used to make the skin and face firmer and more youthful-looking. Hyaluronic acid fillers are used in the creases in the nasolabial folds (popularly known as the Chinese mustache), lips, and cheekbones but they can also be used in other wrinkled parts of the body, such as the back of the hands.

The growing popularity of dermal fillers stems from numerous tests and studies, which indicate that it is a proven method for diminishing lines and creases and recreating a more youthful appearance as you age.

How long do dermal filler treatments last?

It depends on the type of injectable implant that is used, however, our dermal filler patients in our Lisbon clinic can achieve a more youthful appearance from four months to several years on average with a duration of 12 -16 months.

Myths and truths about Hyaluronic acid fillers

Many people believe that the treatment loses effect with repetition, but in fact, the results are cumulative and the quality of the skin improves with each application.

The area where the hyaluronic acid is applied does not lose its sensitivity, but at the time of the application, there may be sensitivity alterations if a local anesthetic is used to make the application more comfortable. There is no interference with the muscular or nervous component of the face, so the application of the substance does not compromise the facial expression.

If the skin is healthy, there are no contraindications. If the application is performed by certified and experienced professionals, the risk of haematomas and oedemas is minimised.

Hyaluronic acid and botulinum toxin are different substances with different ways of acting and with different therapeutic effects. Both are equally recommended and are often complementary. The main function of botulinum toxin is to relax the muscles and hyaluronic acid is to hydrate the skin and give it volume.

Finally, it should be clarified that the application of hyaluronic acid is not painful, although some people may experience some discomfort.

Who are dermal fillers suitable for?

At our clinic in Lisbon, we believe that each patient must meet the following criteria to have a dermal filler procedure:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Be in good health
  • Have noticeable wrinkles and lines that will benefit from the use of dermal fillers
  • Your skin must be free of injury or inflammation
  • Have reasonable expectations for the results that dermal fillers can achieve
What causes the skin to age?

As you get older, your skin loses its ability to naturally maintain an optimal amount of moisture. Collagen production also tends to slow down with age. This causes the skin to lose its firmness and volume, resulting in the appearance of wrinkles and lines. Sun damage and other environmental factors, medications, diseases, and harmful lifestyle choices such as smoking and poor nutrition also contribute to the appearance of ageing marks.

Although it is inevitable with age, most people abhor the appearance of wrinkles, which compromise good looks and break down the smoothness of the skin. As the face is constantly exposed, the signs of ageing are more noticeable in this area, which leads to a great demand for aesthetic procedures such as dermal fillers and other types of injections and treatments to reduce wrinkles and expression lines.

Nasolabial folds – the famous “Chinese moustache”

The nasolabial folds, commonly known as “Chinese moustache”, are the crease or wrinkle that appears on the face, from the side of the nasal wing to the corners of the mouth, on both sides, as if separating the cheeks from the lips, and may extend to the sides of the chin. With age and the sagging of the skin in this region, they may appear or become more pronounced.

The filling with hyaluronic acid is an excellent treatment option to soften and correct the nasolabial folds or “Chinese moustache” because it is a substance already present in the constitution of the skin and it allows to give back a texture and consistency similar to the natural one. It is a product that presents concentration variations and allows applying in thin furrows the product with less density, and in deep furrows with a denser gel, which provides greater volume and filling.

After about 12 to 24-16 months, the product is absorbed by the skin, requiring a new application, and perhaps more volume, as ageing progresses. The fact that it is absorbed over time is an advantage, as the consistency of the skin changes and thins, unlike a perennial or non-absorbable product, which does not follow the dynamics of the skin and leads to a less natural appearance.

lip wrinkle treatment

Upper lip wrinkles or “bar code” wrinkles

Hyaluronic acid treatments are also used to treat lip wrinkles, on the upper and lower lip, also known as “bar code”. These are a mark of ageing, undesired mainly by women and mostly appear from the age of forty onwards, as small vertical creases on the part between the upper lip and the nose. As the years go by, they extend to the contour of the lip, appearing also on the lower lip and if they are not treated, they progressively become deeper and larger in quantity.

There are several factors that encourage their appearance: poor skin elasticity, which is genetically defined and is lost over the years, hormonal decline during the pre-menopause and during the menopause; loss of supporting tissues such as jawbone, as a result of dental extractions; excessive sun exposure; hyperactivity of the orbicularis labi muscle, a muscle around the mouth that, for example, in smokers, is in hyperfunction.

In conclusion, hyaluronic acid is the best treatment for the so-called “bar code” and hyaluronic acid is currently the product of choice for those who wish to prevent it and those who wish to treat it.
